What Are the Different Types of Hair Extensions?

At Jean Paul Spa and Salons, we offer different types of hair extensions for any occasion. But what sets each type apart? Whether you’re looking for a quick hairstyle for a night out or a semi-permanent option for the long-term, we can help you navigate the different types of extensions and find the one that’s right for you. Here’s what you need to know about the different types of hair extensions.

Clip-Ins

Clip-in hair extensions are the quickest to apply. Synthetic or natural human hair is attached in strips to tiny clips that you can fasten into your hair at the root. You don’t need a professional to attach clip-in hair extensions for you, but they’re also the least permanent solution for longer hair. Women usually clip in these types of hair extensions for a few hours but remove them before bed, as the clips are uncomfortable to sleep in.

Tape-Ins

Tape-in extensions consist of wefts of hair attached to a type of adhesive strip. When activated with heat, the adhesive seals the extensions to your natural hair. Tape-in extensions look natural but will fall out easily unless you use special shampoo and conditioner that won’t affect the adhesive. These types of hair extensions cause little to no damage to your natural hair, but they only last 6-8 weeks before needing to be reapplied.

Pre-Bonded

Pre-bonded extensions, also known as fusion extensions, are attached to the hair with an adhesive tip. Unlike tape-in extensions, these are attached in very small sections, which means they usually don’t put too much strain on the natural hair. It usually takes between 2 and 4 hours to apply pre-bonded extensions, and they need to be reapplied every 8-12 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.

Microbeads

Microbead extensions are similar to pre-bonded extensions in that they are attached in very small sections. However, rather than using heat or adhesive to attach them, they are attached using tiny beads that are tightened to secure the extensions to your natural hair. Due to the lack of heat or glue, these extensions usually do not cause much damage when applied correctly.

Hand-Tied

Hand-tied extensions is a method of hair extension application where a stylist attaches beads onto a row of a client’s natural hair. The detailed process is ideal for those looking to add more volume and length that looks natural without putting a lot of tension on the scalp or hair. Hand-tied extensions are ideal for people with straight to wavy hair types because the beads will lay flatter against the scalp, and detangling can be done closer to the root, just below the beads. This is one of the most common type of extensions done by Jean Paul Spa and Salons stylists!
